LPA 24 hour Kid's Camp
HOME

It was cool and windy on Saturday, August 23, 2003 when 6 children arrived at the boat access for Kid's Camp.  Counselors were Teri Johnson (camp 52), Marie Kennison and Kyle Johnson.  Tents were set up, outdoor games were played and snacks provided while they waited for the weather to warm up.  At 9:30, the group hiked up "Urie's Trail" where each child collected natural items such as pine cones, leaves and moss which they used to make a craft later that day.  They saw animal prints, a snake that had just eaten breakfast and was too full to move, learned to identify several plants, flowers and mushrooms.  While scavanging for these things, each child was given a pair of latex gloves to protect them from poisonous plants.  Once they arrived at the open field, snacks were served and a relay race was played.

Being a lake association, they were educated about Eurasian Milfoil, Zebra Mussels, swimming safety, all while bringing weeds ashore that had been harvested by the weed machine the day before.  After identifying the weeds, they were spread out to dry and used to start a campfire that evening.  The children made natural plant frames to take home, played Bocce Ball, read stories, made "grape faces", played hide-and-seek, tag and other games.  For dinner, they roasted their own hot dogs, made s'mores, then told ghost stories and sang camp songs around the fire.

The children were in their tents by 8:30p.m. bundled up with extra blankets provided by Teri because of the cold.  All were awake by 7:00a.m. and had breakfast at Teri's camp before the parents came to pick them up at 8:00.  All 6 of the kids had a great time, vowed to come again next year and bring a friend along.  Good job, Teri & company.  It make be called Kid's Camp, but it can also be called "Parent's Night Out" for those who took advantage of the opportunity.

Attendees were Sofia Kimball, Stephanie Merchant, Kristen Wright, Jack & Ross Anderson and Keara Esposito
