Monitoring the Lake Parker Boat Access for Eurasian Watermilfoil.
Many thanks to Teri Johnson, camp 52, and her husband Rob for all the work they did monitoring the Lake Parker boat access this summer. Teri is the Lake Parker Association Fishing Committee Chairperson. She also volunteered to manage the Vermont Conservation Plate Grant that provided funds for us to monitor the access this summer for boats and trailers that might be carrying milfoil or zebra mussels into the lake.
Teri and Rob constructed a sign alerting boaters to the milfoil threat and inspected boats and trailers during times of high boat traffic. The monitoring was shifted into high gear during the Quad Lakes Fishing Tournament which was held the weekend of September 8 & 9, 2001. This is, by far, the weekend of the highest boat traffic on Lake Parker and, because one of the participating lakes is known to have an infestation of Eurasian Watermilfoil, Teri provided for very thorough monitoring. A pressure washer was obtained for washing boats and trailers with high pressure hot water. A special thanks to Officer Scott Labor and Garrett Moylan of Newport Rental Center for all their help and generosity. A tent was set up and stocked with hot coffee and donuts for the fishermen and a brochure was handed out that had a map showing the best fishing spots on the lake along with an explanation of the Eurasian Watermilfoil threat. Teri arranged for volunteers to staff the washing station in shifts from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and 4:00 AM until the tournament ended at 4:00 PM on Sunday.
Everyone thought the effort was a great success and we hope to do it again next
year.
Teri said that without exception the fishermen were very receptive to this kind of lake protection effort with many expressing their appreciation with unsolicited donations to the Lake Parker Association.
